The Mayor's priorities on transport
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, is working to deliver the affordable, reliable, and safe transport network that Londoners deserve. Transport is a cornerstone of the Mayor’s vision for a fairer, greener, healthier and more prosperous city for everyone.
Together with Transport for London (TfL), the Mayor’s work on transport includes:
- Making public transport more affordable, including freezing TfL fares for five full years, introducing the ‘Hopper’ fare to give bus and tram passengers unlimited journeys within an hour for just £1.75, and providing care leavers aged 18-25 with half-price bus and tram travel.
- Expanding the transport network by delivering improvements such as the Superloop network of outer London express bus routes, the transformational Elizabeth Line, the Night Tube and Overground, and new stations including Nine Elms, Battersea Power Station, and Barking Riverside.
- Improving passenger experiences, such as rolling out 4G and 5G mobile coverage to around 80% of Tube stations by the end of 2024, renaming all London Overground lines to make the network easier to navigate and better reflect London’s diverse communities, and investing in more toilets on the TfL network.
- Making major investments in the Tube network, including modernising lines like the Circle, District, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan line, refurbishing Central line trains, and upgrading trains on the Piccadilly line.
- Decarbonising London’s transport system, including delivering over 1,000 zero-emission* TfL buses, a greener taxi fleet, and a record number of electric vehicle charge points.
- Creating a more accessible and inclusive transport network, including increasing the proportion of step-free Tube stations and introducing mini ramps to cover the gap between trains and platforms at all London Underground platforms that are step-free to train.
- Enabling more people to enjoy walking and cycling in London through the Healthy Streets Approach, making London’s roads safer for everyone, removing barriers to participation, and expanding the London-wide Cycleway network.
Delivering on these priorities is vital to making London a fairer, greener, healthier and more prosperous city. A city that is not only home to more people, but a better place to live. A city where transport is affordable, reliable and accessible for all Londoners. And a city where the best, easiest and most convenient transport choice will increasingly be the active travel choice.
